Lunch in Portugal on a budget: what €12 really gets you

, ,

In many European countries, €15 barely covers a sandwich and a coffee. In Portugal, if you choose wisely and go local, it buys you a full-on lunch. Wine included.

Food is a big part of the culture here. Most locals don’t just “grab a bite.” It seems like they take their time -often an hour or two- to eat, chat, and drink. And they never leave without a strong shot of Medronho (or two). I honestly don’t know how they get back to work afterwards, but somehow they do 🙂

Don’t expect anything fancy-looking. A Prato do Dia is honest food: grilled fish or a heavy pork dish, overcooked (but super tasty) veggies, a crispy salad, and plenty of potatoes. You’ll get olives, bread and a thick veggie soup. Also a generous glass (more like half of a liter) of vinho da casa. And to finish, there is a strong espresso. Could be with a little shot of Medronho, if you’re feeling brave 🙂

You won’t find these meals in the tourist hotspots, but in the small, family-run tascas. Often tucked away next to a busy road. Menus are written on a chalkboard, conversations flow in Portuguese, and you will definitely not find glossy menu’s with pictures on the table.

The setting might not always look cozy, but boy do I love it! The vibe is just spot on. If you like that slightly wild, rough charm of the south of Portugal, then this is it. Lunch in Portugal is social and generous. By sitting down for a Prato do Dia, you’re tasting the real South.

For me, it’s perfect on a Friday afternoon or a lazy Sunday. Ideally followed by a nap or a cold jump in the ocean to recover. Because, you know, the plates are fullll and the medronho is strong 🙂

One of my go-to places? A small tasca in Portelas. The owner brings us two Sagres beers without even asking, knows what we want to eat and always takes time to have a little chat, no matter how crowded it is.

And all of this? For less than €12.

I decided not to make a list of places, because half the fun is to wander around, feel the vibe, and practice your Portuguese slang. You got this 🤗

And honestly, I didn’t want to bother any of these hardworking, kind owners with photos or questions. So just wander, sit down, and dive into honest food and loud conversations.

That’s Portugal for me: simple, warm, and full of flavor.

obrigada e bom apetite! 🇵🇹🍷🐟

About Me

Hi, I’m Elke.
I moved from Belgium to Portugal, chasing a deep longing for space, simplicity, and stillness.

After a rocky start and lots of searching, I ended up in the last place I expected: off-grid, in a Tiny House, surrounded by silence and nature.

Through my camera, I want to show you real life in Portugal.
What is it really like? The untold side of emigration. The beauty and challenge of Tiny House living. And of course: lots of images from the beautiful South.

Let’s wander together.
xxx Elke
